When it comes to carp fishing bait, most anglers immediately think of boilies, pellets, or wafters. And while those baits absolutely catch fish, there are certain situations where OMC's Seb Malik consistently trusts one bait above everything else — tiger nuts. Below he explains the tips and tricks he uses to make truly irresistible tiger nut hookbaits.

Over the years, tiger nuts have become one of my favourite carp fishing baits, especially when targeting big carp on heavily pressured lakes. In this article, I want to show you exactly how I prepare super sweet tiger nuts for carp fishing, why they work so well, and how I boost them for maximum attraction on the hair rig.

If you prepare tiger nuts correctly, they can become one of the most effective natural carp baits in your entire setup.

Why I Use Tiger Nuts for Carp Fishing

For me, tiger nuts really shine on waters where carp see a lot of angling pressure. Most fish are constantly being introduced to the same boilies and pellets week after week. Because of that, a well-prepared tiger nut can often appear far less suspicious to bigger, more cautious carp.

Another huge advantage is their toughness.

If you fish waters with nuisance species like crayfish, bream, or smaller fish constantly attacking your bait, tiger nuts can be a game changer. Their hard texture means they stay on the hair much longer than softer hookbaits.

That durability gives me confidence that my rig is still fishing effectively even after long periods in the water.

But the real magic happens during preparation.

Once properly soaked and boiled, tiger nuts release natural sugars into the water, creating a sweet, sticky liquid carp absolutely love. That natural attraction is one of the reasons tiger nuts continue to catch big carp year after year.

How I Prepare Super Sweet Tiger Nuts for Carp Fishing

Preparing tiger nuts properly is incredibly important. Not only does it improve their effectiveness, but it also ensures they are safe for carp to consume.

This is the exact process I personally use, notice how (from the images) I start this process in the winter, more on that later....

Step 1 — Fill the Bucket

First, I take a PB Bucket and fill it around one-third full with dry tiger nuts.

You never want to overfill the bucket because tiger nuts expand quite a lot once they begin soaking.

Step 2 — Add Plenty of Water

Next, I add at least double the amount of water compared to the volume of nuts.

Tiger nuts absorb a huge amount of water during soaking, so it is always better to use too much rather than too little.

If some nuts are left exposed, they can dry out and prepare unevenly.

"Give the unprepared nuts a good soaking - totally submerge them"

Step 3 — Soak for 36–48 Hours

I then seal the bucket and leave the tiger nuts to soak.

While 24 hours is the minimum, I personally prefer soaking them for 36–48 hours. This gives the nuts enough time to fully absorb water and begin releasing their natural sugars.

This longer soaking period is one of the keys to achieving that super sweet finish.

Step 4 — Boil the Tiger Nuts

Once soaked, I transfer the tiger nuts into a large pot and add fresh water.

I make sure there is more than enough water covering the nuts before bringing everything to a steady boil.

I boil them at medium heat for at least 1.5 hours.

During this stage, the water slowly thickens as the natural sugars are released from the tiger nuts.

"Boil those tiger nuts!"

Step 5 — Allow Them to Cool Naturally

After boiling, I leave the tiger nuts to cool naturally in the same pot.

I never drain away the liquid because this is where so much of the attraction is held.

That sweet, cloudy syrup is incredibly effective for carp fishing.

Step 6 — Let the Tiger Nuts Draw

Once cooled, I transfer the tiger nuts and all of the cooking liquid back into a bucket.

If necessary, I add a little more water to keep everything fully submerged.

Then I leave them to stand for another 3–5 days.

This is where the tiger nuts really come alive.

Over those few days, the liquid becomes thicker, sweeter, and stickier — exactly what I want before introducing them into my swim.

Save the Leftover Tiger Nut Liquid

One thing I always recommend is saving any leftover tiger nut liquid separately.

A lot of anglers throw it away, but it is packed with natural attraction.

I regularly use it for:

  • Soaking boilies
  • Boosting spod mixes
  • Adding to stick mixes
  • Coating pellets
  • Improving particle blends

It works brilliantly as a completely natural bait enhancer.

How I Prepare Tiger Nuts for Hookbaits

When I want to make my hookbait even more attractive, I keep things very simple.

First, I pick out a few of the biggest tiger nuts from the bucket and place them into a small bait tub.

Then I coat them with our sweet and creamy iScream Nutty Sauce.

"The iScream Nutty Sauce is the perfect coating - it's made of tiger nuts too!"

The combination of naturally sweet tiger nuts and Nutty Sauce creates an incredibly attractive hookbait that has worked brilliantly for me on difficult waters.

I usually leave the nuts soaking in the sauce for a while before putting them onto the hair rig.

That extra boost of attraction can often make all the difference when targeting bigger carp.

Are Tiger Nuts Good for Big Carp?

Without question.

Properly prepared tiger nuts remain one of the best big carp baits available. Their natural sweetness, crunch, durability, and unique food signal make them incredibly effective all year round.

For me personally, they are at their best when:

They have earned a permanent place in my bait approach.

Final Thoughts

Tiger nuts have been catching big carp for decades, and for good reason.

When prepared correctly, they create a highly attractive natural bait that carp simply love feeding on. The process itself is simple, but taking the extra time to soak, boil, and mature them properly makes a huge difference to their effectiveness.

If you have never experimented with tiger nuts before, I would strongly recommend giving them a try on your next carp session.

You might be surprised just how effective they can be.

"You'd be nuts not the try them!"
